Resume

The current body of work, begun in 2005, consists of vividly colored landscapes that combine a primitive, gestural spontaneity with a deep layering of painted washes. The luminous color and cramped spaces have a medieval quality, reminiscent of stained glass windows, and evoke a kind of spiritual and psychological presence. These landscapes of rocks, trees, and broad color fields invite the viewer into imaginative worlds both strange and familiar.

Each painting begins with a specific visual idea and feeling. These provide the foundation upon which the painting will evolve, much like a musician might pick a key and tempo. From there the paint is applied intuitively, with each gesture and color informing the next, in an improvisational process that allows the artist to access unconscious impulses. And while a painting may come together quickly, the artist will deliberately introduce elements to make the resolution more difficult. It is often in that struggle that some of the most intriguing and significant elements come into play.

Using pouring and brush work, the oil paint is applied and layered. The artist uses a painting medium to create transparency, allowing her to layer color on color, giving the paintings a luminous glow. Often pigment is scraped off with trowels, cardboard, or hardened brushes to create a new textured surface and expose color from below.

These paintings are sensual and physical, while the titles suggest a subtext that is both personal and allegorical. The artist feels that the work resonates with feelings of aloneness and separation, despite the warmth and vibrancy of the color. There is a sense of mystery in these lonely, isolated, beautiful spaces. Viewers are invited into the paintings to recognize in them places they have known on an emotional level.
