Artist Statement

The current paintings use strong colors, organic shapes, and images to create a bridge between what we see and experiences that are beyond the visible. These works are all born of personal inner experiences, and of events and perceptions in the world. A dynamic relationship between color, form, and movement give these paintings both musical and archetypal qualities.
A painting will usually start with a conception, expressed in a simple visual form. The initial idea may have its origin in a tangible, meditative, or intuitive experience. The images take form using acrylic paint and watercolors, mixed with acrylic mediums. Painted in thin glazes, this process allows light to shine through and bounce between the layers, amplifying the vibrancy of the colors. Less transparent and opaque colors are also used under, over, and between layers, accentuating the richness of depth and texture.
A painting may take a few weeks up to two months to complete. From conception to completion the painting will usually undergo a metamorphosis. This sense of becoming is equally part of the painting process, the vitality of the painting, and the vibrancy of the viewer’s experience.
The paintings are a way to give an imaginal presence to realities beyond the physical. In achieving this, the paintings combine intuitive, unconscious, and deliberate approaches, simultaneously. There is an intuitive sense of how the elements come together, an unconscious way the painting takes on a life of its own, and a deliberate, conscious directing of the work toward its realization.
For both the artist and the viewer, these paintings offer an involvement in thinking and feeling, as they experience the transforming of non-physical realities into images. This is a crossing of a threshold that leads to self-awareness, a new enthusiasm and wonder for the world, and to feelings of reverence and devotion toward life.
