Artists Statement

Four series of large-scale photographs concentrate exclusively on the sky and water: Seascapes 1996 Thru 2006, Summer 2009, Winter 2009, and Waves in Black and White 2011. The images were taken from a single vantage point overlooking the Atlantic Ocean in Rockaway Beach, NY.

While most of the photographs were taken during sunrise and sunset, there are some from the midday hours, as well. Each day’s photography brought a different view of the sea–peaceful and calm–tumultuous and angry, and often a combination of both, depending on time of day, time of year, and the weather. The process was one of focused awareness of the delicate changes in the light and the clouds. Being centered and mindful of the moment is the attitude that allowed these pictures to be made. The photographer regards her experience in dance as the source of her appreciation of movement in nature.

These photographs range from strongly abstract to more representational images. However, all images in the series share a minimalist aesthetic, using natural objects such as the sun and clouds in a strongly geometric structure. When she looks through the viewfinder, the photographer sees the final work, using a zoom lens. All colors are natural and unaltered; the image is never cropped.

The intention is to explore the remarkable ever-changing beauty of the sea and sky at each fleeting moment. The ocean’s shore carries the echoes of time, flowing from past to unknown future. This work invites viewers to connect to their own
