Artist Statement

The current bronze sculptures continue this artist’s interest in both the highly realistic representation of human beings, and in presenting the full range of human emotions. The sculptures embody the defeated postures of beggars, the playful fun of jesters, and the human drama of aging and mortality. The works’ themes have ranged from romance to political critique. In the implied narratives of these pieces are the pathos, humor, and absurdity that are all part of life.

As newer sculptures are created, they take their place in open-ended series that focus on specific aspects of human behavior. For instance, in the Mindset series the unraveling of the psyche is seen as literally breaching the heads of figures, with each kind eruption distinctly imagined. In recent additions to the series, hands accompanying faces gesture defiantly toward the viewer. The Mockery series is a satiric response to the political climate, an expression of outrage to the arrogance of those in power.

The sculptures begin with a feeling or experience that moves the artist. First, a small maquette is quickly created with clay over a wire armature, to get a sense of form and movement. Next, a full-sized figure is sculpted, using  plasticine clay, or at times plaster. The artist makes his own molds, and refines the resulting wax impressions. He works directly with the foundry during the bronze casting and personally develops the patinas that complete the work.

These sculptures are non-verbal means of communication that are meant to speak directly to the viewer, evoking experiences that are familiar to all of us. The work is meant to be accessible, striking a balance between sculptural form and the essence of the human condition. In addition to aesthetic pleasure, the intent is to move and impact the imagination and feelings of the viewer.
